Doug,
Antifreeze might mot be a bad idea. Most should have some lubricant for the waterpump and some anti corrosion protection. Clean up what you have and try running a weak antifreeze/water mixture.
Hmm, buying anti-freeze on a hot (year round 80ºF+) tropical island does present a bit of a challenge. :D

Try going into a parts store or new car stealership and ask for "coolant". Many manufacturers have very specific requirements and will, most likely, carry jugs of the stuff with their brand name on it.
